THIS 9/11: WE HONOR, REMEMBER, REUNITE
“May the lives be remembered, the deeds recognized, and the spirit reawakened be eternal beacons, which reaffirm respect for life, strengthen our resolve to preserve freedom, and inspire an end to hatred, ignorance and intolerance.”
These words are part of the mission statement of the National September 11 Memorial & Museum at the World Trade Center in New York City. As the nation and world marks the 15th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, The Arbutus Volunteer Fire Department (AVFD), shares the sentiments of the 9/11 Memorial and calls upon Arbutus and our surrounding communities to make this September. 11, 2016 a day of commemoration. In memory of the fire fighters who lost their lives AVFD will raise 343 American flags, each representing a fire fighter who gave their life on that day, and will be displayed from Sept. 10th-12th.
On the 11th, as part of a day of remembrance, AVFD will sound their siren at the exact times of each planes’ impact (8:46, 9:03, 9:37 & 10:03 A.M.). We invite you to remember and honor the thousands of innocent men, women, and children that were killed by terrorists in the horrific attacks of September 11, 2001. The memorial will commence with a candle light vigil featuring guess speakers, 6:30 p.m. at the Arbutus Fire House. Come thank our local first responders for their dedication to protecting our community while remembering the firefighters, law enforcement officers and the many Americans who have served and are currently serving in our nation's military—many of whom enlisted as a response to the 9/11 attacks.
While providing the community with an opportunity for remembrance, AVFD will offer sponsorships for each flag on display to support “Tuesday’s Children” a non-profit organization that helps the children of our fallen heroes.
Thank You for your support
