Women Accepted As Full Members

It was 1980 when the first women were accepted as full members of VFD. Unfortunately, for many years some still insisted that the women did not belong in the firehouse and were not physically or mentally capable of being a firefighter. But for nearly 20 years, women have competently filled nearly every rank within the Department. Not only have they served as firefighters and paramedics but also as Operations officers, Administrative Officers, including President, and served on the Board of Directors. To this day, AVFD is well known for having a higher than average percentage of female members.
